The Rourke Ranch, also known as the Wineglass Ranch, was a cattle and horse ranch founded by Eugene Rourke in 1871. Three generations of the
Rourke family lived and worked on the ranch for over 100 years. It was known throughout southeast Colorado as one of the oldest and most successful
local enterprises, comprising over 52,000 acres. The Ranch, located in Picketwire Canyon along the Purgatory River, is now owned by the USFS
which is rehabilitating the ranch buildings for overnight rental. Today, the complex includes a house, barn, stable and doghouse. Nearby there are
also rock art panels and dinosaur trackways. Volunteers will do adobe plastering & brick-making, carpentry and painting. Volunteers may participate
for one or more workdays. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Free tent camping & some bunk spaces are available at the site, with full-service
accommodations at La Junta (1 hour away). For more information, call 303-623-1504 or email mpro@nthp.org . RSVP by Friday, August 22nd, 2008.
