WORKSHOP UNVEILS FREE MONEY FOR HISTORIC PROPERTY RENOVATIONS
Trinidad, CO (January 5, 2006)
At 6pm, Wednesday, January 11, Trinidad-Las Animas County Economic Development will host a workshop on one of the underutilized sources of funding for owners of properties in Trinidads National Historic District and other designated historic properties.
Earlier this year representatives from the Colorado Historical Society presented a workshop on the Colorado State historic preservation grants program which has already delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars in rehabilitation funding to historic buildings in Trinidad. The upcoming workshop focuses on rehabilitation tax credits, which can provide up to 40% of the cost of rehabilitating a historic property back to the property owner. Depending on the scope of the project, this program can provide more money to the owner than the grants program, and it can work in conjunction with grants. In some cases, property owners can work with investors to obtain a portion of the tax credit funding up front. Properties that are designated contributing structures in the historic district, or properties which are individually listed on the National or State Registers of Historic Places are eligible for this program if they are either commercial or rental properties. In order to be eligible, the owner must apply for tax credit designation prior to beginning a project and the project must meet certain criteria. A representative from the Colorado State Historical Society will be presenting information on how to qualify and obtain tax credits. Additionally, Trinidad-Las Animas County Economic Development has the necessary forms and documentation at their offices located at 134 West Main Street, Suite 12 (the Historic Bell Block Building) and can assist property owners through the application process.
Around the state of Colorado many communities have utilized this and other funding programs to revitalize historic buildings leading to greater prosperity in their downtown districts. Economic Development is pleased to bring this opportunity to Trinidad and hopes to see many property owners in attendance. The free workshop will be held from 6-9pm, Wednesday, January 11, at Trinidad State Junior College in the Sullivan Center, in the George Leone Lounge.
