LA JUNTA, COLO. – April 29, 2008 – The Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be full of fun, food and live entertainment on Saturday, May 3. As part of the festivities, a live entertainment stage featuring various artists will be set up on Second Street between Colorado Ave. and Raton Ave. in La Junta.
The La Junta Middle School Mariachi Band will kick off the day’s entertainment. Additional scheduled performances throughout the day include singer Crystal Estrada, LOC Break dancers, Keith Vigil appearing as Elvis, Miss. Pre Teen Pueblo 2007 Kaylan Padilla-Zamarripa and Joey ‘just j’ Gonzales.
A talent contest will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature various entertainers of all age groups. Prizes will be given to the top entertainers of each age group. Interested participants can sign up at the entertainment stage the day of the event.
Sponsored by the Arkansas Valley Community Center (AVCC), KFVR Tigre 106.5 FM and Spotlight Productions, the Cinco de Mayo Celebration will begin in downtown La Junta on Second Street from Colorado Avenue to Cimarron Avenue and run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Celebration will feature authentic Mexican cuisine served at the La Junta Senior Citizens Center in addition to vendor booths, games for kids, a beer garden for adults and horse and carriage rides from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A Car Show, held in the Otero County Court House north parking lot, will feature muscle cars, original cars, low-riders and much more. For motorcycle enthusiasts, a Poker Run will begin at the La Junta City Park at 9 a.m.
At 7:30 p.m., the Celebration will move to the Rocky Ford Gobin’s Community Center for a live concert featuring Novillos Musical out of California. California–based Los Atrevidos de Morelos and local bands Los Traficantes Del Norte and Los Amantes Del Norte will open the show.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets for the concert are available at all AVCC locations including 1500 San Juan Ave. The concert is for ages 21 and over; tickets are $12 each (if purchased by May 2) or $15 each (the day of event).
The funds raised during the Celebration will be added to the Building for the Future fund. A fund established to raise $3.5 million to construct a 30,000 square-foot facility for the various operations of AVCC. To date, AVCC has secured more than $470,000 for this facility. The new building will be equipped with all the newest developments and technology in the field of supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.
