November

November 15 - Pike Monument Dedication & Postal Cancellation. At two o’clock in the afternoon on this date in 1806, Pike states in his journal that he saw a “small blue cloud” in the distance. A half an hour later, the mountains appeared before them. Three cheers were given for the “Mexican mountains.” This will be the historical dedication of the marker commemorating the “First Sighting” of the mountain to later be named after him. At John Martin Reservoir, east of Las Animas. Contact Don Headlee (719) 336-3476

November 13th - "Pike Slept Here" - Nov. 13, 1806, was the night Pike and his men camped along Willow Creek in what would become Lamar, CO. Pike's Tower in Lamar's Willow Creek Park is one of Colorado's oldest monuments to Zebulon Pike. Part of Colorado's first WPS project, the tower is believed by many to mark the spot of Pike's campsite on November 13, 1806. In honor of the bicentennial of Pike's expedition, the tower will be re-dedicated followed by other Pike related events at the Lamar Public Library.

Enjoy a Pike expedition historic presentation and a special viewing of the film "Zebulon Pike and the Blue Mountain". Original illustrations from a new Pike biography, on loan by the Salida, CO artist who researched and created them.

Boggsville- First sighting spot of the Peak. Meet Zebulon Pike and enjoy living history event. See Pikes Peak from a telescope up in Willow creek Pike Tower pictured at left.
