February TBA - Fifth Annual High Plains Snow Goose Festival and Nature Arts and Crafts Fair in Lamar, Colorado. It will start off on Friday the 23rd with registration at the and social hour in the evening, then for a fun-filled day of tours and activities on Saturday and Sunday. High Plains Snow Goose Festival will feature Pete Dunne, the "Bard of Birding". During the day go on a guided nature walk, and/or visit local and historic sites of interest. March TBA - Equinox Festival - Springfield, The "tours" to Picture Canyon are only during the equinox dates during March and September and are free of charge. The Forest Service opens the gates for access to Crack Cave during the Equinox Festivals and a guide accompanies vehicles to the site to give background information and guidance within the cave. 719-523-6591. March - In mid-March, the Lesser Prairie Chicken begin to breed and they have chosen an area of the Comanche as their "booming" ground. The lek is located south of Springfield and is free of charge to the public. Reservations on a first-come-first-served basis for the daily sunrise visits to the observation blinds. There is an additional parking area where the bird's behavior may be observed by the public from their vehicles. March 29 - Film Premiere “Traders, Tribes and Travelers: The Story of Bent’s Old Fort”. Join us for the premiere of the park’s first new orientation film in over 30 years. The new film will be shown to the general public for the first time at the Koshare Kiva, 115 West 18th Street, La Junta, Colorado at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow with light refreshments and the opportunity to meet the filmmakers and some of the cast.
March 29 - The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will hold a youth archery clinic Thursday, March 29th from 6-8 p.m. Join us to try out our new indoor archery range at the Colorado Division of Wildlife Office at 2500 S Main in Lamar. Youngsters interested in the sport of archery are invited to attend this free event.
Activities include a 3-D archery shoot and instruction. Boys and girls ages 8 and up are invited to attend, but must be accompanied by a parent. Instructors from the DOW will help youngsters learn the finer points of shooting bows. The DOW will furnish the equipment, including bows that are designed for youngsters and are used with the National Archery in the Schools Program. This event is limited to 35 youth, so register early by calling Linda Groat at 719-336-6608.

March 30 - Small Wind Workshop. There will be a Small Wind Workshop with information regarding farm scale wind generation Friday, March 30th. The meeting is from 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. in the Bowman Building Small Lecture Hall (Room 138) at Lamar Community College. The Baca County Commissioners and Southeast Colorado RC&D are the primary sponsors for the event. Presentations will be made by iCAST, Rural Development, the Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, and National Renewable Energy Lab. April 18-19 - Free workshops offered by Jeff Pryor of the Anschutz Family Foundation will be in the region in April and will provide free workshops at both Otero Junior College and Lamar Community College. All participants from Southeast Rural Philanthropy Days, as well as others who are interested, are invited to attend. At each location, Pryor will hold a short workshop on project planning, developing measurable goals and evaluation. He will follow this with an informal session about the granting guidelines for the Anschutz Family Foundation, followed by a question and answer session. Pryor will visit OJC on April 18, meeting attendees in the Student Center there. He will be at LCC on April 19 in the Buchanan Events Room (Room 121) of the Trustees Building. The sessions at both locations will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. The Koshare Indian Dancers are sponsoring a benefit performance to aide area farmers and ranchers of Southeast Colorado and are donating the proceeds from this event to Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition.

You will find a complete itinerary of your auto tour of the dinosaur tracksite at http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/coma/palo/autotour_brochure.pdf. Picketwire Canyonlands is located about 25 miles south of La Junta. The area is accessible by foot, bicycle, or horseback. Allow for a full day hike, and be sure to bring plenty of water and food. The Canyonlands are pristine and remote, and none of the area's rock art sites have been identified for public viewing. Look carefully and you can find petroglyphs of meandering lines, abstract designs, and animal figures.Contact the USDA Forest Service in LaJunta at 719-384-2181 for information on access to the dinosaur track sites. NO CAMPING OR UNAUTHORIZED MOTORIZED VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED IN PICKET WIRE CANYONLANDS.

June 9 – 10 - Living History Encampment at Bent's Old Fort. Visit the 1840s with teachers, students and living history volunteers and staff perfecting their 19th century skills. The encampment, which begins June 9, trains participants in presenting living history to the public. Event is open for the public to view ongoing demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 – 10. Trails and Rails Trips. Narrated excursions aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief depart La Junta, Colorado on Mondays and Fridays for overnight trips to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tours operate in May, June, September and October. $15 for adults and $7.50 for children. Picketwire Canyonlands is located about 25 miles south of La Junta. The area is accessible by foot, bicycle, or horseback. Allow for a full day hike, and be sure to bring plenty of water and food. The Canyonlands are pristine and remote, and none of the area's rock art sites have been identified for public viewing. Look carefully and you can find petroglyphs of meandering lines, abstract designs, and animal figures.Contact the USDA Forest Service in LaJunta at 719-384-2181 for information on access to the dinosaur track sites. NO CAMPING OR UNAUTHORIZED MOTORIZED VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED IN PICKET WIRE CANYONLANDS.

September 27- 30- "Where the Mountain Branch Crosses the Purgatoire" Santa Fe Trail Association Symposium 2007, Trinidad, CO. Join us for a gathering of Five Trail States to commemorate the Santa Fe Trail. Thursday registration at the Trinidad History Museum with a reception welcome featuring traditional Hispanic food and fair with Mariaches. Friday and Saturday at Trinidad State Junior College drop in for Trail talks and historic presentations in the mornings and visit the booths and exhibits downstairs. Tours are held in the afternoon and include El Corazon De Trinidad Historic District Walking & Trolley Tours, River Walk Tours, Gallery Crawls and more. Bus tours of wagon ruts, stage coach stops, watering holes and a variety of historic sites. The park’s main living history event again takes place in the fall, and this year celebrates the traders, tribes and travelers associated with the Santa Fe Trail. - ARTISTS AUCTION - Koshare Indian Museum, La Junta, Colorado. Join us for an exhibit featuring a donated piece of art from each artist featured in the artist of the month series. This exhibit will be on display throughout the month of December. A silent auction will be held during regular business hours (10a - 5p), as well as one hour prior to Winter Ceremonials. The bidding will officially end one hour prior to the 4:00p Winter Ceremonials. During the intermission of this performance, the winning bidders will be announced. You need not be present to win.
